SAMPLE 11

More and more young people from wealthy countries are spending a short time doing unpaid work, such as teaching or building houses for communities in poorer countries.

Why do young people choose to do so? Who will benefit more: young people or the communities?

Intro Ver 1 :

There is a trend among young people from wealthy countries towards doing charities in underdeveloped countries. They are doing this for several reasons, and I believe that the communities gain more benefits from this phenomenon.

Intro Ver 2 :

It has been observed recently that young volunteers from wealthy countries are donating their time and efforts to underdeveloped countries. There are several underlying reasons for this phenomenon and that the communities are getting more benefits than the volunteers.

I believe that getting more experience in life is the goal among young people who are volunteering in third-world communities. First, they can gain more people skills such as organization skills, and communication skills over voluntary activities, which might become a massive advantage for their career path later. Second, young volunteers can meet and form new relationships with other like-minded people, who share the same kindness and life perspectives in making less fortunate communities better. Finally, young volunteering can be attributed to self-fulfillment. The feeling of giving and seeing other people happy is great and the bonding between the intended participants and the locals is tightened which brings much fun and satisfaction/ a sense of achievement.

Given such benefits, I believe that host communities can receive much more valuable benefits from young volunteering. First, the countries or communities in need receive substantial human resources to support their local projects. For example, young volunteers are often deployed to construct houses and schools for the poor in rural areas. Secondly, in case of recovery efforts in response to natural disasters such as droughts, tsunamis or floods, young volunteers play a pivotal role. The 2020 high floods in the middle parts of Vietnam, for example, attracted a substantial number of volunteers to support the host organizations and the governments in distributing consumer goods to the needy. Finally, volunteering can also reduce stereotypes, increase appreciation of the local culture and on the worldwide level, education activities accelerate the globalization process.

In conclusion, although young volunteering is attributed to the significant advantages they would gain in their life, the host communities benefit more from this phenomenon.
